Coffee in the morning on an empty stomach is not a good idea, in fact, it is a terrible idea. Why?
- Stomach acid – there is hydrochloric acid in the stomach at the right level; and it helps the body digest food. When the stomach is empty, the acid has to work much so that it can slosh around and cause abdominal distress. If you drink coffee on an empty stomach, you will add to the issue and place even more acid in your body. If you have too much acid in your stomach you can cause damage to it and the digestive tract which can lead to heartburn, irritable bowel syndrome, and stomach ulcers. You can consume longevity coffee which is a low-acid type and can reduce the amount of acid in the morning. This does not mean that you should drink it on an empty stomach, either. There are many non-acid-related health effects that coffee has on the body.
- Anxiety – if you go through the mornings on an empty stomach, you decrease the ability of your brain to process serotonin properly. When the brain cannot process it, then it will cause anxiety and depression. If you drink a cup of coffee on an empty stomach it can cause even more anxiety and will boost your cortisol and adrenaline levels, leaving you nervous, weak, and jittery.
- Dehydration – drinking coffee on an empty stomach increases the fluid amount in the body, resulting in dehydration. Many people would reach up for another cup of coffee, making things worse.
- Loss of appetite – you won’t have the appetite to eat anything after you drink coffee and for that reason coffee is very effective in losing weight. While coffee can be great to suppress your appetite at certain points in the day, the mornings must not be those points, you need breakfast. If you skip it you will gain more weight than coffee can ever help you shrug off.

According to researchers, if you eat a good and healthy breakfast you are free to enjoy a guilt-free coffee between 10 a.m. and noon.
